M4 Homework – Momentum with Inelastic and Elastic Collisions

Please complete the momentum worksheet for homework and the two questions below.

1) A 732 kg car stopped at traffic lights is hit from behind by a 1720 kg truck moving with a speed of 15.5 m/s. If the car was in neutral and its brakes were off, so that the collision is perfectly elastic, find the final speed of both vehicles after the collision.

2) A ball of mass 6.2 kg and moving with a velocity of 12.5 m/s hits a stationary ball of mass 25 kg. If the collision is perfectly elastic, what is the velocity of both balls after the collision?

 

Please remember that because these are elastic collisions then both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved so you can use the two formulas derived from using the two simultaneous equations
